Kathleen Herbert's virtual room (detail)

From 1st June 2020

The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight. - John Berger, ‘Ways of Seeing’

From 1st June, the gallery launchs a series of virtual artists’ rooms, offering the viewer the opportunity to satiate the urge to see art at a time where galleries cannot open; where art is shut away behind closed doors. Imagination is often sparked from limitation - the lockdown, in spite of all its constriction, has provided us with the opportunity to imagine and explore new ways of showing and sharing art. This virtual viewing experience is the opposite of the gallery in Kennington, where the space’s Georgian architecture forms playful interactions with the artwork displayed, informing its understanding. Virtual viewing offers more of a blank canvas against which the work can be viewed but the playful remains in the rooms’ curation. There is a limitlessness in these virtual rooms, removed from the practical restrictions of exhibition making and the time restrictions of viewing. They offer the opportunity to view at leisure, to return to the work again and again without having to frame the experience between the thin parameters of time and travel.

As the physical gallery comprises three rooms, so this project will be launched in sets of three, beginning with Oona Grimes, Katie Deith and Gerry Smith. This will be an opportunity to reexamine and reassess previous work by the artists; the works becoming new in their virtual iteration.
