Nicky Coutts  Mimics series 1

Series of 5 photo-etchings on Somerset paper, edition of 5 + 1 A/P 13 x 17cm or 17 x 13cm

A series of photo-etchings made by superimposing found images of mimetic animals onto photographs of the central landscaped area at Lincoln’s Inn—the UK’s largest concentration of lawyers’ chambers. For Coutts, the oriental flying gurnard, the sun bittern, the owl butterflies, the serval and four-eyed butterfly fish have all evolved similar attributes to lawyers in their manipulation of foreground and background, dark and light. Their display of eyespot markings—a form of mimicry in which a spot on their body resembles the eye of a different animal—not only makes them adept at deceiving potential predators, but two animals in one.
