Polly Gould   The Martial Art of What We Say

Performance on Saturday 29 October 2005
7pm for 7:30pm

The Martial Art of What We Say is a live-sound work that recounts a meeting between a man and a woman in a bar. In recalling this conversation, the loud speakers take the place of the two protagonists while the members of the audience become players in the piece, and stand in for the crowd on a busy dance floor, a crowded meeting place. The soundtrack is cut onto discs and played back from the mixing decks by the artist, who is silent apart from the amplification of recorded sound. The narrative tells of voice, violence and self-defence; the physical effect of subsonic sounds and the power-play in conversations.
